This policy explains what happens to data when you use this JLPT study site (the "Site"). It is written to describe what the Site actually does, rather than to cover every hypothetical.
Your study history is the core of how this Site works — the spaced-repetition scheduler needs to know which cards you have seen and how well you answered. All of it is kept in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device and is never transmitted to us or to anyone else. We cannot read it, and we have no copy of it.
| Stored key | What it holds |
|---|---|
srs_state_v1 | Flashcard scheduling state (due dates, intervals, ease) |
srs_log_v1 | Your review history — which cards, when, and how you rated them |
srs_settings_v1 | SRS preferences (daily limits, display options) |
srs_modes_v1, srs_sel_v1 | Which decks and study modes you selected |
srs_new_order_seed_v1 | A random number used to shuffle new-card order for your install |
ess_state_v1, ess_log_v1 | The same scheduling state and history for the Essentials module |
ess_settings_v1, ess_modes_v1, ess_sel_v1 | Essentials preferences and selections |
n3_listening_progress_v1 | Which listening exercises you have completed |
hub_bg3d_v1 | Whether you turned the animated background on or off |
Because this data lives only in your browser, two consequences follow. First, clearing your browser data will permanently erase your study progress, and we cannot restore it. Second, your progress does not follow you between devices or browsers.
You are always in full control of this data. Clear it at any time through your browser's "Clear browsing data" / "Cookies and site data" settings for this site, or through the reset option inside a study module where one is offered. No request to us is needed.
We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand roughly how many people visit and which study modules get used. It records page views, referring site, and general device and country information.
Vercel Web Analytics is cookieless and does not build a cross-site profile of you or track you across other websites. See the Vercel Analytics privacy documentation for details.
Some parts of the Site load resources from other companies. When your browser requests those resources, the provider necessarily receives your IP address and basic request information, in the same way it would if you visited their site directly. We do not control what those providers do with it.
| Service | Why it is used | Sets cookies? |
|---|---|---|
| Vercel | Hosting and delivery of the Site | No |
| Google Fonts | The Noto Sans JP / Noto Serif JP typefaces used for Japanese text | No |
| Cloudflare (cdnjs) | JavaScript libraries used for the animated background | No |
| unpkg | A JavaScript library asset | No |
| YouTube | Embedded video used in listening practice | Yes |
| News publishers | Article images in the News module load from the original publisher | Possibly |
Embedded YouTube players are the one component that may set tracking cookies in your browser. If you do not use the listening modules that contain video, these are not loaded.
The Site itself does not set any cookies. It uses localStorage for study progress, as described in section 1, which is a separate mechanism that is not transmitted with network requests. Cookies that do appear come from the embedded third-party content listed above.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you rights over your personal data. Because we hold no accounts and no server-side records, the practical position is unusual and worth stating clearly:
Our legal basis for anonymous analytics is legitimate interest in understanding basic usage of a free educational tool. Where consent is required for cookies set by embedded third-party content, we rely on your consent.
This Site is a general-audience language-learning tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the Site collects no personal information from anyone, no such information can be provided by a child.
We hold no personal data to retain. Study progress remains on your device until you delete it. Aggregate analytics are retained by Vercel according to their standard retention period.
If the Site's data practices change — most likely by introducing advertising — this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date above revised. Material changes will be reflected here before the new practice takes effect.
